Pseudotumor cerebri may be caused by a number of recognized mechanisms, but in the majority of instances etiology is not determined. Known causes of brain swelling are reviewed, and various theories regarding the pathogenesis of idiopathic pseudotumor are discussed. Considerable evidence implicates subtle and perhaps varied endocrine dysfunction as the basis for at least some cases of pseudotumor presently termed idiopathic.
