Abstract

Gas in the portal veins and the intestinal wall of infants can be detected on plain radiograms of the abdomen. Whatever the underlying basic disease may be, this sign indicates that bowel wall is seriously compromised. Contrary to earlier experience, these infants may survive if the diseased bowel section can be resected.

Literature concerning the previously reported forty-three pediatric cases is reviewed and nine new cases are added.
